Lee County fishing lake reopens Feb. 1

Anglers will once again be able to cast their lines in the Lee County Lake as the fishing spot reopens under new management.
The public fishing lake will reopen next Thursday after being closed for six months.
The temporary break could be a good thing for anglers.
“A lot of times after that little down time, fishing can really pick up,” said Matt Marshall, Alabama lakes supervisor. “The fish haven’t seen a lure since August … (They) should be ready to bite.”
The lake was also recently restocked with several thousand full-grown catfish, measuring up to 12 inches.
The last time the lake temporarily closed, it was drained and restocked before reopening in 2013. The fishing was “pretty easy” after that, Marshall said.
“A lot of fish have been caught in the last couple of years,” he said.
The lake closed again in early August as new management was sought.
The new managers will be Chris and Tina Wright.
The lake offers public restrooms, concessions, a covered fishing pier and a boat ramp. Visitors can bring their own boats for a $3 charge, or they can rent a boat for $5. All anglers over 12 years old should bring $3 for a daily fishing permit.
All Alabama residents age 16 to 65 are required to fish with a fishing license, according to the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries. These are available for purchase at the lake.
The lake is 6 miles southeast of Opelika or 9 miles east of Auburn on Moores Mill Road. It will be open sunrise to sunset and closed on Mondays.
